Six NBA championships, five Most Valuable Player (MVP) awards, two Olympic titles and seven scoring titles – Michael Jordan is considered one of the best basketball players of all time. But it is not only on the field that the NBA legend has created real hype. Memorabilia of his monumental triumphs regularly set auction records.
It was not until September 2022 that a jersey of the basketball player broke all records: at a Sotheby’s auction, it fetched an incredible sum of 10.1 million US dollars. Jordan wore the shirt to the 1998 NBA Finals, when he won his sixth and final championship with his team – the Chicago Bulls.
The most expensive piece of clothing by an athlete up to that point was footballer Diego Maradona’s jersey at $ 8.6 million. Now Jordan’s red jersey with the iconic back number 23 has climbed to the top of the auction records.
Shortly after the jersey was auctioned, a pair of sneakers set another record. The Nike Air Ships, which Jordan wore in his first season with the Chicago Bulls in 1984, fetched almost 1.5 million US dollars at a Sotheby’s auction in October 2021. This made them the most expensive shoes ever sold at auction.
In June 2022, Christie’s auction house, in partnership with Sports Authority Authentication Services (SAAS), launched the Six Rings – Legacy of the GOAT auction, selling six rare pieces of memorabilia of NBA champion Michael Jordan. The sale exceeded all expectations and generated total proceeds of over 1.4 million US dollars.
The Star of the show: a signed Upper Deck 1986 Fleer #57 Rookie Card. The final bid was just over US$1 million, setting a new record price for a Michael Jordan Rookie Card.
