Christie’s Shifts Gears with Gooding & Company Acquisition: Christie’s is gearing up to drive back into the car market with the acquisition of Gooding & Company, the renowned collector car auction house founded by ex-Christie’s director David Gooding in 2003. Expected to close by the end of the year, the deal will see the company rebranded as Gooding Christie’s, fueling Christie’s growing luxury portfolio. With a softening car and art market, Christie’s sees this move as a strategic pivot, and according to chairman François-Henri Pinault, it perfectly aligns with the Pinault family’s passion for blending art, culture and luxury.

Oasis Guitar Fetches $174,000 at Sotheby’s Auction: An Epiphone Les Paul Standard, prominently featured on Oasis’s debut single ‘Supersonic,’ just sold for $174,000 at Sotheby’s Popular Culture auction, well above its $105,000 estimate. This auction, marking the 30th anniversary of Oasis’s debut album Definitely Maybe and the band’s upcoming 2025 reunion tour, also saw two other Gallagher guitars exceed their estimates. A 1980 Gibson Flying V sold for $47,000 and an Epiphone EA-250 fetched $63,000. The auction’s highest sale was a Steinway grand piano from Abbey Road Studios, which went for $252,000.

Eminem Rocks Air Jordan 4 ‘White Thunder’ at 2024 VMAs: Eminem lit up the stage at the 2024 MTV VMAs, delivering a performance that grabbed headlines – but it wasn’t just his music that caught attention. Sporting a pair of Air Jordan 4 ‘White Thunder’ sneakers, his choice of footwear was more than interesting. It might seem odd to spotlight Eminem’s outfit in a newsletter about collectibles, but when someone like Eminem wears something, it’s more than just a fashion statement. These sneakers, already iconic, as well as similar models could gain even more value in the hands – or rather, on the feet – of a cultural legend, blending style with significance.

Paul Allen Auction Nets Over $10M with Rare Artifacts and Records: A Christie’s auction of items from the late Paul Allen’s collection netted over $10 million. Highlights included a 1939 Albert Einstein letter to President Roosevelt, which sold for $3.9 million, and a Cray-1 supercomputer that fetched over $1 million. Other notable sales included an Apple-1 personal computer for $945,000 and a Titanic lunch menu for $340,000. The auction featured 36 rare items, with all proceeds going to charity as per Allen’s wishes.

Rare Patek Philippes Set to Fetch $22M at Sotheby’s: Sotheby’s will auction a 31-piece private collection of rare Patek Philippes on the 10th of November 2024, in Geneva, with a high estimate of $22 million. Highlights include coveted references 1518 and 2499, featuring unique pieces and vintage models from the ’40s and ’50s. The collection, showcasing iconic designs in yellow, pink and white metals, also includes notable watches from Vacheron Constantin and A. Lange & Söhne. The sale is likely to approach its high-peak estimate, given that Sotheby’s new rates are in effect.

What’s Up (and Down)

👎 & 👍 US Diamond Market Shows Mixed Signals with Strong Consumer Sales and Sluggish Retailer Purchases: The US diamond market is experiencing contrasting trends – while consumer sales of natural-diamond jewelry rose 8.5% in July, retailers report slower purchases due to concerns over falling prices. Retailers are cautious about inventory, leading to reduced dealer activity. In contrast, diamond inventories in the US have increased slightly, though at a slower rate compared to India. Despite current market challenges, experts anticipate improved demand as the holiday season approaches.
