Female Artists Are On The Rise: The art market is increasingly spotlighting female artists, reflecting broader gender balance efforts. Although female artistsâ sales value dropped 8% in 2023, the number of their works sold surged 21%, showing resilience and growth. In contrast, male artists saw a 20% drop in sales value.
Recent auction records underscore this trend, with Georgia OâKeeffeâs painting Jimson Weed/White Flower No. 1 selling for $44.4 million, a record for a female artist. Contemporary stars like Yayoi Kusama and Cecily Brown also achieved impressive results, while emerging artists like JadĂ© Fadojutimi are commanding high prices. In 2023, female artists made up 32% of total sales and 30% of lots sold, a notable rise from 261 artists in 2019 to 728 in 2023. This growth, alongside high-profile museum retrospectives for artists like Yoko Ono and Jenny Holzer, suggests that the shift toward recognizing female artists is both significant and enduring.
Female artists are not only setting new auction records but are also reshaping the landscape of art collecting, with growing interest in emerging and diverse talents. However, despite this momentum, the fact that female artists still represent only a third of the market highlights persistent gender disparities. UBS x Art Baselâs latest report shows a promising shift: high-net-worth individuals spending over $10 million annually allocated 55% of their budget to female artists in 2023. This progress is encouraging, but the full potential of female artists is yet to be realised.
