London Becomes a Launch Pad for Africa’s Booming Art Market: London is increasingly emerging as a hub for African art, with firms like Strauss and Co expanding their operations in the city. Recently, the auction house launched its Art Club London, aligning with a private tour of Zanele Muholi’s exhibition at Tate Modern.
The market for African art in the U.K. is growing, with auction sales in London rising from $36.7 million in 2021 to $39.1 million in 2023, even as global fine art sales declined. Touria El Glaoui, founder of the 1-54 Contemporary African Art Fair, noted that interest has shifted to a more global base, with collectors increasingly from the Global South.
